Cool notes from “Committed” by Elizabeth Gilbert

Saturday, September 11th, 2010

These are my notes from Elizabeth Gilbert’s new book, Committed.  Gilbert is the gal that wrote Eat, Pray, Love.

Click here to watch her 2009 TED talk – It’s a very cool talk – and here are my notes on Committed

Committed, Elizabeth Gilbert, 2010 (author of Eat, Pray, Love)
Highlights from my personal notes:

  • • We cannot choose everything simultaneously

  • • More than one of anything brings the automatic possibility of uncertainty and confusion

  • • Choice –» personal freedom –» emotional uncertainty, second guessing and regrets … use the Process and Appreciation tools

  • • Give yourself some time off to deal with your perplexities

  • • I will write this, do this, for a finite and limited number of receivers: my tribe

  • • If a fish and a bird fall in love, where will they sleep?

  • • Failing, becoming an expert in failure, can be a very good thing if:

  • •  It does not stop you, and

  • •  If you find or take something of value from it, e.g., what caused the failure, what were the factors

  • • “Failure” is an interesting opportunity for personal or professional growth

  • • There are any number of other players with whom  you can do whatever you wish in joy, adventure and fun

  • • All men and all women are mostly the same, most of the time

  • • “Plant an expectation; reap a disappointment.”  In other words, THIS IS IT! Stop lying about it …  to yourself or others.

  • • Anything becomes “hard work” and, ultimately, unrewarding, when the expectation that only an achieved result will bring any kind of enduring satisfaction or fulfillment or enlightenment.

  • • Family grows into clan grows into tribe (150±) grows into kingdom grows into dynasty grows into nation-state

  • • By unnerving definition, anything the heart (Expanded Self) has chosen for its own mysterious reason(s) it can always un-choose later – again, for its own mysterious reason(s)

  • • Have, engender, embody a humility, a respect for forces that are bigger than me/you/us – something even approaching awe (p.85) (Expanded Self?)

  • • It is supportive to learn and to know where you end and someone else begins

  • • Of “simpler times” and nostalgia: what time has ever been a “simple time” for those who were living it?

  • • Insight and reminder of how goofy my mind chatter can be … no … usually is; how it freezes, paralyzes me in story and analysis; how it resists, how unwilling it it is to give up anything in the face of, for the sake of change.

Something profound?

Something profound possibly?

I wonder if I can do 300 words on something profound.

Like, I woke up this morning hearing Monty Python’s Galaxy Song in my mind. “Just remember that you’re standing on a planet that’s evolving, and revolving at 900 miles per hour. And orbiting at 90 miles per second so I recon, the Sun that is the source of all our power.”

And in a Busting Loose context, that was very supportive as to the illusion I live within. And I dimly get the power that it takes to just produce and sustain THAT set of circumstances. And then, in a Busting Loose sense, that what if it really is a hologram at Plank Scale, giving it such seductive touch-ability, smell-ability, see-ability, that – if I am seeing and experiencing it I must be creating it!

I mean, the “I” that is the Player self that is joined-at-the-hip, or conjoined in consciousness with Expanded Self. Conjoined. Too much! I mean, really! CON-joined; joined in grand CON experience called The Human Game. “Conned” into believing we aren’t really creating this whole thing, that “it” is somehow “real.” “Real-er,” more real than ourselves. That “it” is happening TO us rather than THROUGH us.

It’s much more convenient to believe that this all is happening TO us than THROUGH us.  Is convenient the word I’m searching for here? It’s certainly convenient to The Human Game illusion of convincing myself that I’m the opposite of who I really am: infinite, eternal, unlimited. The dual pattern/belief of being-at-the-effect-of something outside myself, not myself, and the hard-to-describe unseperatable relationship (con-joined relationship) with an infinitely powerful, eternal, Expanded Self “driving the bus” at all times. joyfully! Peacefully! In full and complete freedom! In exploration of itself through the Player me in a full-immersion 3-D movie called “The Life And Experiences Of Tom Miles.”

Just the can’t-failed-ness of that image is juicy beyond words.

So … how will Player Tom listen for Expanded Self Inspiration? I almost said “today,” but than realized that there really is no “today.” Just the experience of sequential moments of ever-fleeting “now” in eternity and infinity.

And Infinite is infinite. Cool!

Infinite Possibility – so what does that mean?

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

So, infinite is infinite:

in·fi·nite adj               1.  without any limits that can be measured or realized                       2.  extending indefinitely or having unlimited spatial extent

When it is said that God knows everything, that everything has already been created before and we are just living into it, that could be looked at as a Phase 1 concept…just another Phase 1 limitation and restriction. All God/Infinite Self needs to know is that anything is possible. And Infinite Expanded Self knows that to test anything out, a hologram and player is needed to check out or experience the thing in physicality.  Being a physical player is cool, and being a DOING physical player is where and how your version of The Human Game is actually experienced.

Other names for this playing are awareness, mindfulness, being in the now, being childlike, being in awe, expanding into infinite possibility, allowing a particular version of Infinite Possibility to unfold through your Human Game hologram. And you create other people, places, and things in your hologram to:  (1) reflect back to you something you think/feel about yourself, (2) provide answers, data or information to you, (3) set something in motion for your Human Game experience.

Example: insert an ignition key, turn it, step on the gas, look where you’re going.  But this presupposes there are things called cars … that you have one of them … that you have a destination in mind (or no destination, just an exploration or adventure in mind, or ‘downtime’ to support inspiration) …  and …  that there is some WHERE  that can be gone to.   And in any case still, ‘stuff can happen,’ so even a purposefully planned and carefully executed trip can have contain surprise or novelty. NOVELTY! Expanded Self loves NOVELTY, and explores it through you as the player playing your human game hologram and story.

Any creation within that context is just a creation.  And within infinity/eternity there are no limits to creation.  There is infinite room for all kinds of creativity and novelty by definition, or as Robert says, “I have an infinite ability and desire to create.”

And all of this fits Amit Goswami’s comment that one is creating their unique experience within eternity …  moment by moment, including all the details and logic and support and history all the way back to the big bang!

So, this may be is why The Human Game is played sequentially and stretched out over ‘time.’  Even after trusting and claiming The Truth until you have your personal experience of that Truth called Busting Loose.

Like football. You know the rules and the field and the opposing team and the individual players, and how it is scored and that games end with one team ‘winning.’   But players come to play the actual play, to see how a particular game unfolds, to see ‘what happens if.’  And even then, it’s only just one game, one season.  And each game and each season is complete unto itself, and then there’s the next year.

Games are fun, challenging, interesting, exciting, rewarding, and the outcome unknown. And you play because you know how the game is played, because you want to experience how the game is played by you, as persona/player and create your own WOW experiences. And you are creating it all just to play with, talk with, reflect back to yourself something you are thinking about yourself, to provide  information or data, to set something in motion for yourself.

Phase 2 is doing and experiencing this from an expanded and expanding perspective of who you really are and who is really driving your bus.

What is now?

Who’s now is it; to whom does it belong?

For whom is it being now, now?

Where does/did now come from?

Where does/did now go to?

Even better, what is the true nature of either “coming-ness” or “going-ness”?

Who is experiencing your now right now?

Who’s now are you experiencing or observing — right now?

And isn’t the answer always “I/me”?

And what meaning are you assigning to either your now or your I/me right now?
